ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Working under the supervision of qualified engineers and technicians, you will assist with the maintenance, inspection, and servicing of smoke ventilation systems across a variety of sites. This is a hands-on role, ideal for someone looking to develop their skills in the smoke control industry.
  • You will not be required to hold formal qualifications for this role, but you must have a keen interest in learning, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to work safely and responsibly at all times.
  • Support qualified engineers and technicians with planned and reactive maintenance activities.
  • Carry out basic inspection and cleaning tasks under supervision.
  • Record asset details, findings, and site notes in FTG company software as directed.
  • Assist with the preparation of tools, parts, and equipment for maintenance and remedial works.
  • Maintain a tidy and safe work environment, both on site and in the company vehicle.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and, when required, with site representatives in a polite and professional manner.
  • Work on projects primarily in London and the South East, with travel across the UK as required, including occasional stop-overs and overtime.

  • Authority to make commissioning changes: No.
  • Authority to stop works: No.
  • Right to refuse unsafe work: Yes — empowered to refuse to carry out any task where health and safety may be compromised and to immediately report concerns to the supervising engineer or manager.

MAIN DUTIES

  • Assist with the servicing and testing of smoke ventilation systems under supervision.
  • Follow all instructions from supervising engineers/technicians to ensure works are carried out in line with standards and safety requirements.
  • Work safely at height when required, using harnesses, ladders, or access equipment provided.
  • Use your own basic hand tools and any company-supplied equipment as instructed.
  • Support site set-up, including moving materials and preparing work areas.
  • Assist in identifying and reporting defective parts or systems.
  • Maintain accurate and clear records of work completed, under guidance.
  • Take personal responsibility for developing your knowledge of smoke ventilation systems, with progression opportunities into a Technician role or a formal Apprenticeship.
  • Carry out any other reasonable requests from FTG management.

JOB SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Essential:
  • Current, full clean driving licence.
  • Willingness to travel across the UK and stay overnight when required.
  • Basic practical skills and ability to use hand tools.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Strong awareness of health & safety requirements.
  • Willingness to work at height.
  • Desirable:
  • Prior experience in a site-based, construction, or maintenance role.
  • Basic understanding of smoke ventilation or similar building systems.
  • Rooftop Safety/Work Restraint training (e.g. SpanSet).
