ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- A JIB Technician or equivalent with at least 5 years of experience commissioning Mechanical Extract Systems and other smoke ventilation systems within the smoke ventilation industry. You will work with and site-supervise team members with different skill levels, helping those individuals maximise their own skill sets. You will always have a health and safety conscious mindset and be confident feeding back to management any opportunities to improve.
- You will have a keen work ethic and be willing to go that extra mile for the company and the customer to get the job over the line and inspire others to achieve the same high standards.
- Manage projects to ensure they are completed as per scheduled requirements.
- Communicate effectively with customers and staff at all levels and ensure that the reputation of FTG Ltd is maintained throughout.
- The majority of FTG’s work is carried out in London and the South East, but our services are often called upon all over the UK, including Wales, Scotland and even Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. As such, shared with the rest of the team, you will be willing to work all over the UK as required, including periodic stop overs and overtime.
- Responsible for carrying out planned preventive maintenance (PPM) activities on smoke ventilation systems in line with contract scopes, manufacturer guidance and applicable standards.
- Responsible for using FTG company software to raise and communicate quote requirements to the office, including clear scope, asset details, diagnosis, recommended remedial actions, parts/materials and supporting photos/notes.
DECISION-MAKING AUTHORITY AND H&S POWERS
- Commissioning changes: authorised to implement and adjust commissioning parameters and sequence of operations on the work in hand where required to achieve compliance with the design intent, statutory requirements and recognised standards. Any material deviation from specification is to be recorded and reported to the FTG Project/Contracts Manager and, where relevant, the client for approval.
- Stop works: authorised to stop works under your control when unsafe conditions, non-conformances, design conflicts or quality issues are identified that could compromise safety, compliance or system performance. Works may resume once the issue is rectified or an agreed mitigation is in place.
- Right to refuse unsafe work: empowered to refuse to carry out any task where health and safety may be compromised, and to instruct team members accordingly, pending risk control measures or a revised safe system of work.
- Reporting and records: required to document commissioning changes and any stop-work/refusal decisions in company systems, notify the FTG Project/Contracts Manager promptly, and brief affected parties on next steps.
NICEIC QUALIFYING SUPERVISOR (ELECTRICAL) — ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Act as the nominated NICEIC Qualifying Supervisor (QS) for FTG Ltd, with day-to-day responsibility for the safety, technical standard and quality of electrical work under your supervision.
- Ensure electrical work complies with BS 7671 and other applicable standards and regulations; maintain access to current technical reference materials and apply them in practice.
- Plan and provide appropriate supervision of operatives based on risk and competence; ensure only competent persons carry out electrical work and that they are adequately supervised.
- Be proficient in inspection, testing, verification, certification and reporting procedures for the range of electrical work undertaken; ensure appropriate certificates/reports are issued (e.g. EIC, EICR, MEIWC) and retained in company systems.
- Maintain records demonstrating the availability, suitability and ongoing accuracy (calibration/verification) of test instruments used.
- Safeguard the use of NICEIC certificates/forms and ensure they are completed correctly; prevent unauthorised use or loss.
- Accommodate and participate in NICEIC assessments/surveillance and facilitate access to documentation, records and sites selected for assessment.
- Support the Principal Duty Holder by ensuring systems are in place for compliant delivery, complaints management and corrective actions; maintain complaint records relating to technical standards.
- Promote a positive safety culture: ensure safe systems of work, basic fire safety awareness, and compliance with H&S legislation and company policies.
- Conduct routine inspections of FTG installations and provide certification through the NICEIC portal, communicating these certificates to the office.
- To spend time with and supervise team members, observing their skills, ensuring they complete Continued Professional Development through the year and recording this electronically, communicating this to the office.
MAIN DUTIES
- To be able to wire, fix & commission Mechanical Extract Systems.
- To ensure Mechanical Extract Systems are able to be fully operated on every condition listed on the commissioning report to eliminate the possibility of failure to comply.
- To have a clear understanding of all the legislation & British Standards that apply to the industry.
- To ensure that all work by yourself and others complies with latest standards and guidance.
- To be able to wire, fix & commission a wide range of smoke ventilation products from a range of manufacturers.
- To be able to manage large or small installations and ensure that the team you are working with are working to the correct design and standards as per the drawings provided.
- To be able to communicate with other trades to ensure smooth completion of a project.
- To ensure the company vehicle, should you be provided with one, is kept clean and tidy, checked regularly as per company policy, and the office advised.
- To exercise your delegated authority to make commissioning changes, stop works, or refuse unsafe work when required, and to record and escalate such actions in line with FTG procedures.
- Any other reasonable requests from FTG management.
JOB SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
- Driving licence, experience and academic qualifications are essential, and you must be able to evidence this.
Meets NICEIC’s Acceptable AC QS Qualifications (EAS June 2025) — typically including:
- Level 3 electrotechnical craft qualification (e.g. C&G 5357 apprenticeship with AM2/AM2S, or C&G 2357/2356/2346/Experienced Worker with AM2/AM2E, or equivalent).
- Current BS 7671 wiring regulations qualification (e.g. C&G/EAL 2382-18/18th Edition or later).
- Level 3 inspection & testing qualification (e.g. C&G 2391-52, or 2391-50 and 2391-51, or recognised equivalents).
- Minimum 2 years’ technical responsibility for electrical work (as required for the QS role).
- SSSTS or higher; JIB/ECS card holder.
- Rooftop Safety/Work Restraint training (i.e. SpanSet); PASMA (Towers); IPAF (3a/3b).
- Working knowledge of ADB; BS EN 12101; BS 9999; BS 9991; BS 7346-8; and multiple manufacturers’ equipment (e.g. Colt, SCS, FDS, SE Controls).
- Current, full clean driving licence.
