ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

With proven experience in the commissioning, testing, and operation of smoke ventilation systems, you will work with, and occasionally site supervise, members of the team with different skill levels, helping them to maximise their own skills.
You will always have a health and safety–conscious mindset and be confident in feeding back to management any opportunities to improve.

You will have a strong work ethic and be willing to go the extra mile for the company and the customer to get the job completed to the highest standard, and be able to inspire others to achieve the same.

– Manage allocated commissioning works to ensure completion in line with scheduled requirements.
– Communicate effectively with customers and colleagues at all levels, maintaining the reputation of FTG Ltd at all times.
– Work on projects primarily in London and the South East, with occasional work across the UK, including stop-overs and overtime where required.
– Carry out functional commissioning and testing activities on smoke ventilation systems in line with contract scopes, manufacturer guidance, and applicable standards. This may include mechanical/fan systems and car park systems. You will be required to take anemometer and/or door force readings as part of some of these tests.
– Use FTG company software to record commissioning results, raise and communicate quote requirements, and provide clear asset details, diagnosis, recommended remedial actions, and supporting photos/notes.

DECISION-MAKING AUTHORITY AND H&S POWERS

– Commissioning changes: authorised to adjust commissioning parameters and sequence of operations on the work in hand
to achieve compliance with the design intent, statutory requirements, and recognised standards. Any material deviation
from specification is to be recorded and reported to the FTG Project/Contracts Manager and, where relevant, the client for approval.
– Stop works: authorised to stop works under your control when unsafe conditions, non-conformances, design conflicts, or quality issues are identified.
– Right to refuse unsafe work: empowered to refuse to carry out any task where health and safety may be compromised.
– Reporting and records: required to document commissioning changes and any stop-work/refusal decisions, notify the FTG Project/Contracts Manager promptly, and brief affected parties.

MAIN DUTIES

  • Commission and functionally test a wide range of smoke ventilation systems from multiple manufacturers.
  • Verify that systems operate fully and correctly in every condition listed on the commissioning report, eliminating the risk of non-compliance.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the legislation and British Standards applicable to smoke ventilation systems.
  • Ensure all work by yourself and others complies with current standards and guidance.
  • Where required, lead or assist in managing small installation or remedial works, ensuring work is in line with the correct design and standards.
  • Maintain the cleanliness, safety, and roadworthiness of the company vehicle in line with policy.
  • Exercise delegated authority to make commissioning changes, stop works, or refuse unsafe work when required, recording and escalating actions in line with FTG procedures.
  • Carry out any other reasonable requests from FTG management.

JOB SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

While formal electrical qualifications are not essential for this role, you must be able to demonstrate hands-on commissioning experience, technical competence, and a solid understanding of smoke ventilation systems.

  • Essential:
  • Current, full clean driving licence.
  • Proven experience commissioning or functionally testing smoke ventilation systems.
  • Good working knowledge of smoke control equipment, cause and effect programming, and operational testing.
  • Strong understanding of health & safety requirements for site work.
  • Desirable:
  • SSSTS or higher.
  • Rooftop Safety/Work Restraint training (e.g. SpanSet).
  • PASMA (Towers).
  • IPAF (Mobile Vertical (3a), Mobile Boom (3b)).
  • Working knowledge of Approved Document B; BS EN 12101; BS 9999; BS 9991 & BS 7346 pt 8.
  • SE Controls training programme (levels 1–6).
  • Familiarity with Colt, SCS, FDS and other equipment.
